An elephant outlives a mouse. A whale outlives a rabbit. Across species, body size and lifespan track together fairly reliably. Inside the domestic dog, the relationship inverts: a Great Dane is old at seven, and a Jack Russell may still be launching off the sofa at fourteen.
Dogs are the most physically varied land mammal we have ever made, spanning something like a fortyfold weight range from Chihuahua to Mastiff. That variation is unusually easy to study, because it sits inside one species, one genome and largely one set of environments — which is why ageing researchers keep coming back to dogs rather than to mice.
A giant-breed puppy has to build an enormous body in roughly the same window a small one uses to build a tiny one. That means faster cell division, a great deal more of it, and higher circulating growth signals. A single gene, IGF1, turns out to be a major determinant of small body size in dogs, and IGF-1 signalling is one of the most consistently implicated pathways in ageing right across the animal kingdom.
The practical consequence is not that large dogs simply die sooner. It is that they arrive at age-related disease sooner. Bone cancer, cardiac disease and degenerative joint disease all skew large.
The Dog Aging Project, run out of the University of Washington, has enrolled tens of thousands of pet dogs of every size and background into a long-term study of how dogs age, with owners contributing survey data and veterinary records and, in some cases, biological samples. Because dogs share our homes, our air, our sofas and increasingly our sedentary habits, they are a far better model for human ageing than a lab animal in a cage.
A long-running study followed Labrador littermates across their whole lives, with one group fed about a quarter less than the other. The leaner dogs lived roughly two years longer at the median, and — more striking still — developed arthritis later. Two years, on a twelve-year life, from portion size alone.
Nothing else available to an owner comes close to that effect size. Not a supplement, not a bed, not a diet trend.
The uncomfortable version of all this: much of what shortens a big dog's life is decided in the first two years, by how fast we let them grow.
